Racers Defy the Hottest Temps of the Race Season
With the hottest temperatures yet this race season, racers put on their race gear to compete for championship points, money, and a trophy. With temperatures hitting the 97 degree mark, racers geared up in fire suits, boots, gloves, and helmets, while they sat in their hotrods with temperatures reaching 110 plus degrees inside. The track temperature would hit a smoking 140 degrees as racers crossed the finish line. But Danny Custer would defy the heat and take top honors in the Modified Class. Mopar’s lined up side by side at the tree for a heads up race to the finish. Custer a Franklin, Va native took out Rich Walker of Portsmouth Va. Both drivers posted the same dial in of 7.67 but Custer with a quicker reaction time ran dead on this dial taking the win at the stripe. “I came out today not knowing what my car was going to do. I had to use all my spare parts just to be able to race today. It took two buy backs and all my spare parts but I never gave up.” said Custer. While Walker may have had to take home the runner ups trophy; at the end of the day he would earn enough round points to take over the points lead in the Modified Class.
In the TOP Eliminator’s Class, Rail Car drivers Nathan Lilley and Eric Whitehurst would met. Although Whitehurst’s .003 reaction time may have given him a slight advantage over Lilley’s.008 reaction, the win light would go to Lilley when Whitehurst ran under his dial in causing him to breakout.
The 2012 Junior Dragster Track Champion David “DW” Light of Wanchese, NC suffered an eye injury while at the track but it didn’t stop him from holding on to his 2013 points lead. Light took the win beating Julie Ainsley of Virginia in the JR Dragster finals.
Delton Dove battled the high humidity to take the win in Pro Bike. “The higher the humidity got the slower my bike got,” said Dove. Dove beat fellow Biker, Luke Boykin. Both Dove and Boykin would dial in a dial of 5.83. What would have been a heads up race to finish ended when Boykin pushed the tree earning him a red light and giving the win to Dove.
Street Class winner was Darnell Tillett over Tony Boone.
